FAIR LAWN, NJ (WUNF) — At 6:47 PM, Fair Lawn Police responded to 16 Garwood Road following a call to police from a family member of the home owner, reporting that the home owner received an alert on his cell phone from the video surveillance system at his residence and that he observed an unknown person with a mask over his face inside his residence.
As police arrived on scene, Det. Anthony Lugo
& Det. Brian Rypkema checked on an occupied 2016 Honda Accord parked on Gurney Terrace which was around the block from the residence and as the officers ordered the male sitting in a reclined seat out of the vehicle, the driver started the vehicle and sped off, striking Det.
Rypkema and had a minor injury to hand/arm. Officer Justin DiGuglielmo located the fleeing vehicle on Franciscan Way in Fair Lawn and pursued the vehicle on side streets into Glen Rock where the vehicle struck a tree while making a turn from Godfrey Terrace onto Gibson Place, rolling the vehicle onto its roof and landing on the front lawn of 39 Gibson Place. The operator then attempted to flee on foot but was captured by Officer DiGuglielmo in the fenced-in backyard of the same residence on Gibson Place.
Corey DeGroat, age 42 of Englewood, was transported under police guard to Valley Hospital by the Glen Rock Volunteer Ambulance Corps after informing of head and chest pain due to the motor vehicle crash. DeGroat is currently being treated at Valley Hospital.
