NEW YORK, N.Y. (WUNF) — Today in a press release, New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio announced that DHS will deploy more peace officers to provide 24/7 coverage at all mental health shelters.
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) will be conducting a security review of 27 mental health shelters. The NYPD will also be enhancing security at Boulevard Homeless Shelter in East Harlem, where the murder of a resident there occurred.
In the release from the New York City Mayor’s Office another step which was outlined was that DHS will provide additional funding to bolster mental health services at all contracted and DHS mental health shelters.
A new 24/7 protocol between HHC and DHS will be implemented for discharges of clients from HHC facilities to DHS shelters to communicate treatment needs and status.
UNF News Reporter Kyle Mazza said that Mayor De Blasio released a statement and said “The murder of one of our shelter residents is shocking and disturbing, and we must address shelter security with urgency.”
