TEANECK, N.J. (WUNF) — 62-year-old Stalin Kappil of Teaneck, New Jersey who resides at 282 Van Buren Avenue was arrested on charges of 2nd degree Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident.
Kappil, has been charged in connection with the Christmas night hit-and-run death of 59-year-old Teaneck resident Steven J. Leitgeb.
The charges are a result of a joint investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, the Teaneck Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department.
On Friday, December 25, 2015, at approximately 6:47 p.m., the Teaneck Police Department received several 9-1-1 calls reporting that a person had been struck by a motor vehicle while crossing the intersection of Cedar Lane and Garrison Avenue, Teaneck, New Jersey.
Upon responding to the scene, officers found the victim, a man lying in the roadway. The victim, was identified as Steven J. Leitgeb, a 59-year-old Teaneck man, had suffered serious injuries consistent and was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center however Leitgeb subsequently died at HUMC as a result of his injuries.
As a result of the investigation, detectives were able to determine that the fleeing vehicle was a 2003-2005 black Honda Pilot. In addition to other investigative measures, police communicated this vehicle information to the public via the press and media outlets.
Kappil, accompanied by his lawyer, turned himself in to members of the Teaneck Police Department and Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. Kappil was released after posting 10 percent of his $50,000 bail, as set by Municipal Court Judge James E. Young, Jr.
Kappil is scheduled to make his first appearance before Judge Young in the Teaneck Municipal Court on Wednesday, January 13, 2016, at 9:30 a.m.
